Changelog
A log of substantive changes to the Iran Monitor database and project. Dated project notes summarise corrections and methodological changes, and the comparison below lists changes since the latest frozen release. This page is a record of changes, not a version of the dataset; for the data itself see Data & citation.
Project Notes
17 October 2026Version 1.2 publishedVersion 1.2 is published on Zenodo: 114 included people, 54 reviewed exclusions, 53 parent event groupings and 86 discrete operations.
Version 1.2 is published on Zenodo with version DOI 10.5281/zenodo.23428160. It contains 114 included people, 54 formally reviewed exclusions, 53 parent event groupings (IRM-E), 86 discrete operations (IRM-O) and 112 operation–person links; two included people remain event-only. The release includes 195 distinct person Selected Source URLs and age at death supported for 95 people, with 19 Unknown. Its data cutoff is 26 August 2026. Version 1.2 is frozen and remains unchanged by later live corrections; Versions 1.0 and 1.1 and their DOIs remain immutable.
16 October 2026Esmaeil Vaezi name adjudicatedThe live record IRM-P-0152 now uses Esmaeil Vaezi; Esmaeil Khatib remains its sole searchable alias.
By owner adjudication, the Minister of Intelligence is recorded as Esmaeil Vaezi (اسماعیل واعظی), prioritizing the signature reported in Tasnim’s testament excerpt. Sources differ over which name is an alias; this is a canonical naming decision, not verification of a registered legal name. The linked operation title uses Esmaeil Vaezi; its separate identity and all other research facts, including the death on 18 March 2026 and existing Selected Sources, are unchanged. This is a live-only correction; frozen releases and archived snapshots remain unchanged.
16 October 2026Davoud Asgari name correctedThe live record IRM-P-0132 now uses Davoud Asgari; Davoud Alizadeh and Persian spelling variants remain searchable aliases.
By owner adjudication, IRM-P-0132 now records Davoud Asgari (داود عسکری). The burial-report spelling داود عسگری and the historical name Davoud Alizadeh (داود علیزاده) are retained as aliases. The linked event and operation titles use the corrected name. Tasnim’s burial report is now Selected Source 2, with Reuters unchanged as Source 1. The reported burial on 14 March 2026 is not the death date: the recorded death remains 3 March 2026. Age at death remains Unknown. These are live-only corrections; archived exports await the next owner-approved snapshot.
15 October 2026Shateri location adjudicatedThe live person and operation now record the Zabadani area, Syria, with the source's "in or near" caveat preserved.
By owner adjudication, the U.S. State Department 2013 Country Reports on Terrorism is the controlling location evidence for Hassan Shateri (IRM-P-0038): he was killed “in or near Zabadani, Syria”. The live person and operation records now say Zabadani area; the exact site remains unestablished and the map shows only an approximate area placement. A conflicting retrospective account placing him near Tell Aran south of Aleppo is preserved in the project record, not disproven. The responsible-actor coding and all other facts are unchanged. This is a live-database change only: frozen releases and archived exports are unchanged, and no new snapshot has been created.
15 October 2026Ghoreishi date adjudicatedThe live person and Jey operation now record 14 March 2026 by owner adjudication from convergent indirect evidence.
This narrowly supersedes the Ghoreishi date uncertainty in the 8 October note. No source explicitly identifies him among the reported factory casualties; the person-to-strike link and exact death day remain adjudicated inference. The methods page now briefly explains indirect-evidence decisions. Archived exports await the next owner-approved snapshot.
13 October 2026Gholamreza Rezaianfard name correctedThe live record IRM-P-0118 now uses Gholamreza Rezaianfard; Gholamreza Rezaeian is retained as the previous short name.
By owner correction, IRM-P-0118 now records Gholamreza Rezaianfard ( غلامرضا رضائیان فرد). Gholamreza Rezaeian remains searchable as the previous short name. This live-only name correction does not establish a birth date or change age evidence. Frozen releases and archived workbooks remain unchanged; no new snapshot has been created.
10 October 2026Shahriyari Marallu name, date and location correctedThe maintained live record now gives Behnam Shahriyari Marallu, death on 20 June 2025, Ilam and public age 55; conflicting source accounts remain documented.
By owner adjudication, the live person record IRM-P-0096 now names Behnam Shahriyari Marallu (بهنام شهریاری مراللو), formerly recorded as Behnam Shahriyari Maralu. The person and operation IRM-O-0045 now record 20 June 2025 rather than 21 June, and Ilam rather than Western Iran. The account concerns an Israeli airstrike targeting his vehicle while travelling; being on a mission is owner-reported context. Ilam is not resolved between city and province, and the exact road is unknown. The map uses an approximate regional reference only, not a geolocated strike site. Public age at death is corrected to 55; birth dates and birth-evidence details remain private.
The owner-supplied gravestone photographs support the recorded death date and Ilam, but the memorial page’s text gives Tehran and age 56. Other reporting gives different death dates, and earlier official birth-year evidence conflicts with the inscription; these discrepancies remain documented rather than presented as agreement. The IDF’s 21 June release describes a vehicle strike in western Iran without establishing the exact road or resolving the competing incident dates. The memorial is now the fourth operation source; the person’s Selected Sources are unchanged.
The shared event IRM-E-0020 is now titled “2025 20–21 June targeted-command strikes”; Mohammadsaeed Izadi’s 21 June date and event membership are unchanged. These are maintained live-record corrections only. Frozen Versions 1.0 and 1.1, submitted manuscripts and archived snapshots are untouched; the next dataset export awaits an owner-triggered snapshot.
10 October 2026Pourhashemi location revised to Outskirts of AleppoThe maintained live person and operation location changed from Aleppo Governorate to Outskirts of Aleppo by owner decision; the map uses an approximate reference point, not a verified event site.
By owner decision, Kioumars Pourhashemi (IRM-P-0064) and operation IRM-O-0021 now record Outskirts of Aleppo rather than Aleppo Governorate, citing the contemporary IRGC statement “حومه حلب” reproduced by Sarkhat and Tasnim (article 3209399). The target site remains “Joint military operations-room meeting”; the exact suburb, building, meeting site and hospital are not established, and attacker attribution and the later hospital narrative remain disputed. The map uses an approximate city-area reference point only, not a verified fatal event site.
This is a maintained live-record change only. Frozen Versions 1.0 and 1.1, previous snapshots and submitted manuscripts are untouched. The next dataset export awaits an owner-triggered snapshot. This location decision supersedes the location recorded in the 9 October note below.
9 October 2026Pourhashemi death account clarifiedAs of 9 October, the live accounts distinguished Behrouz Esbati’s later account from disputed attacker attribution; location was Aleppo Governorate, superseded by the 10 October note.
As of 9 October 2026, Kioumars Pourhashemi (IRM-P-0064) and operation IRM-O-0021 retained the recorded date of 28 November 2024 and location of Aleppo Governorate. A later account attributed to IRGC officer Behrouz Esbati, reproduced by Radio Farda, describes two Syrian security officers opening fire at the joint meeting and Pourhashemi dying upon reaching a hospital after being wounded. Contemporary accounts attributed the attack to opposition forces; the immediate attackers and exact meeting location remain disputed. Neither the meeting site nor the hospital has been established within Aleppo city. Radio Farda is now an operation source; the person’s three existing Selected Sources are retained.
Addendum, 10 October: the location above describes the 9 October state and is superseded by the 10 October location note.
This clarification concerns the maintained live records only. The dataset download will reflect it when the owner finalizes the current research batch as one archived snapshot; existing snapshots, frozen releases and submitted manuscripts are unchanged.
9 October 2026Location corrected for Saeed BorjiSaeed Borji's live record and its discrete operation now give the location as Absard (Damavand County, Tehran Province) instead of Tehran, and a documentary source has been added. Frozen Versions 1.0 and 1.1 are unchanged.
The live location of Saeed Borji (IRM-P-0087) and of the operation IRM-O-0029 is now recorded as Absard, a town in Damavand County, Tehran Province, rather than Tehran city. The circumstances now read that he was killed on 13 June 2025 in an Israeli strike targeting his home in Absard. His gravestone and an Aparat documentary both give the place of death as Absard, Damavand. The documentary has been added as a second Selected Source. The date, the responsible actor and his separate operation from Akbar Motalebizadeh are unchanged.
This applies to the maintained live dataset only; frozen Version 1.0 and Version 1.1 and previously submitted manuscripts are unchanged. The current dataset download will include this correction once the next snapshot is archived.
8 October 2026Death-date precision corrected for two recordsThe live records for Mehdi Ghoreishi and Mokarram Azimi no longer show unsupported exact death days; both are now bounded dates, and a new range precision has been introduced. Frozen Versions 1.0 and 1.1 are unchanged.
Mehdi Ghoreishi's (IRM-P-0155) previously displayed exact death date of 20 March 2026 has been withdrawn as unsupported. His live death date is now recorded as “March 2026 (exact day unresolved; dead by 18 March)”. ISW–CTP documents strikes at the Jey Industrial Area site on 6 and 14 March 2026, but not a verified fatal date for Ghoreishi, and the record no longer asserts that he died specifically in the 14 March strike.
Mokarram Azimi's (IRM-P-0160) previously coded 2 April 2026 is no longer displayed as an exact day. His live death date is now “1–2 April 2026 (exact day unresolved)”, recorded with a new range date precision so that no day is invented. The associated discrete-operation dates remain undetermined (IRM-O-0076 and IRM-O-0081) and both are held in the owner quality-assurance watchlist pending better evidence. See the Database and the codebook for the date-precision definitions. These changes apply to the maintained live dataset only; frozen Version 1.0 and Version 1.1 and previously submitted manuscripts are unchanged.
5 October 2026Discrete operations recorded across the whole datasetThe live dataset now records 86 discrete operations across all 53 events, and the Database has a new Operations mode; frozen Versions 1.0 and 1.1 are unchanged.
The discrete operation layer (IRM-O) now covers the whole maintained live dataset: 86 operations (IRM-O-0001 to IRM-O-0086) across all 53 events, with 112 of the 114 included people linked to an operation. Two people remain linked to their event only because the specific operation cannot yet be established. People share an operation only where the record states they died in the same strike or at the same named site. Uncertain or bounded dates are kept as stated, without an invented day.
The same update corrected the recorded death dates of Hassan Shateri (12 February 2013), Hossein Hamedani (8 October 2015) and Isar Tabatabaei Qomsheh (13 June 2025), aligned Gholamreza Soleimani's circumstances with his recorded date of 17 March 2026, and recorded Mohammad Aghajafari's death in a separate strike on his residence in Chitgar. The Database now offers Operations as a third mode alongside People and Events. A new snapshot, IM-S-2026-10-05-01, preserves this state. Frozen Version 1.0 and Version 1.1 are unchanged.
4 October 2026Discrete operation records addedThe maintained live dataset now includes its first discrete operation records (IRM-O), nested under existing event records; frozen Versions 1.0 and 1.1 are unchanged.
The maintained live dataset now includes its first six discrete operation records (IRM-O-0001 to IRM-O-0006), each nested under an existing event record (IRM-E). Only people whose specific operation has been adjudicated are linked to one; others remain linked to their event only. Operation fields not supported by evidence are left empty, and operation sources are kept separate from each person's Selected Sources. Operations are now part of the live dataset download and snapshots; see the codebook. Frozen Version 1.0 and Version 1.1 are unchanged.
4 October 2026Defense Council event grouping correctedThe maintained live event grouping for Bahram Hosseini Motlagh was corrected from IRM-E-0028 to IRM-E-0027 after a direct family account placed him at the Defense Council meeting.
The maintained live event grouping for Bahram Hosseini Motlagh was corrected from IRM-E-0028 to IRM-E-0027 after a direct family account in a Fash News report placed him at the Defense Council meeting. Together with Mohsen Darrebaghi and Gholamreza Rezaeian, whose event groupings were corrected earlier for the same reason, these three records now share IRM-E-0027. Frozen Version 1.0 and Version 1.1 are unchanged.
4 October 2026Mahdavi Kalateh death date correctedThe maintained live record for Mohsen Mahdavi Kalateh was corrected from 3 March to 28 February 2026; frozen Versions 1.0 and 1.1 are unchanged.
The maintained live record for Mohsen Mahdavi Kalateh was corrected from 3 March to 28 February 2026 based on a Mehr News report quoting his wife that he was martyred on 9 Esfand 1404. Mehr News is now a Selected Source. Frozen Version 1.0 and Version 1.1 are unchanged.
18 September 2026Photographs added to selected person dossiers111 person dossiers now include locally served, credited photographs as website presentation metadata.
111 person dossiers now include locally served photographs with the credit recorded for each image, and rights or licence information shown where it is available. Photographs are optional live website presentation metadata only: they are not a scholarly research variable and are excluded from dataset exports, snapshots, fingerprints, codebook fields, analysis, filtering, sorting and inclusion decisions.
15 September 2026Version 1.1 publishedVersion 1.1 is published on Zenodo with version DOI 10.5281/zenodo.22769697: 114 included people, 54 reviewed exclusions, 53 event/operation records, 191 distinct selected source URLs, data cutoff 26 August 2026.
Version 1.1 is published on Zenodo with version DOI 10.5281/zenodo.22769697. It contains 114 included people, 54 reviewed exclusions, 53 event/operation records and 191 distinct selected source URLs, with a data cutoff of 26 August 2026. Its dataset file is the immutable snapshot IM-S-2026-09-15-01, used byte-for-byte. Age at death is part of the Version 1.1 dataset (80 supported values, 34 Unknown); birth dates and birth-data sources are not exported, and the Persian-script name remains a live website field that is not part of the release dataset. Frozen Version 1.0 and its DOI are unchanged, and the concept DOI 10.5281/zenodo.22072923 continues to resolve to the project record.
31 August 2026Actor × category × time analysisAnalysis now includes a person-level descriptive cross-tabulation of stored Actor, Category and time, including overall actor–category composition, category composition over time, recorded actor composition over time, and period-specific actor × category matrices.
Analysis now includes a person-level descriptive cross-tabulation of the stored Actor and Category fields over the existing year grouping: overall actor–category composition, category composition over time, recorded actor composition over time, and period-specific actor × category matrices. Combined and disputed actor labels are preserved exactly as recorded and are never split or merged, and each included person counts once. This is a derived live analysis feature; the underlying dataset, the field definitions and frozen Version 1.0 are unchanged.
31 August 2026Event-size analysisAnalysis now includes descriptive operation-size summaries derived from linked included fatalities: single- versus multi-person operations, the exact size distribution, broad periods, an actor comparison and the largest operations.
The Event size analysis now presents descriptive operation-size summaries derived from the existing event–person links: single- versus multi-person operations, the exact distribution of included fatalities per operation, broad periods, a descriptive comparison between responsible actors, and the largest operations. Operation size counts the Iran Monitor included fatalities linked to a record, not all deaths in the real-world event. This is a derived live analysis feature; the underlying dataset and frozen Version 1.0 are unchanged.
31 August 2026Age at death added to snapshotsRoutine dataset snapshots now include the public Age at death field; no birth dates or birth-data sources are exported, and frozen Version 1.0 is unchanged.
Routine dataset snapshots now include the public Age at death field for included fatality records. Records without accepted birth information are exported as Unknown, and records supported only to a range retain that range rather than being given a single value. Birth dates, originally reported birth values and birth-data sources are not exported. Frozen Version 1.0 remains unchanged; Age at death is planned for Version 1.1.
31 August 2026Dedicated Snapshots pagePreserved dataset snapshots now have a dedicated Snapshots page, and Database provides a direct latest-snapshot download link.
Preserved dataset snapshots are now documented on a dedicated Snapshots page, listing the latest preserved snapshot with its identifier, checksum and metadata alongside the full archive. The Database page now provides a direct link to the latest preserved snapshot near the top instead of the former archive block at the foot of the page. Snapshot immutability and the numbered scholarly releases are unchanged.
31 August 2026New Analysis pageA new Analysis page presents descriptive Time and Age-at-death summaries derived from the live database; frozen Version 1.0 remains unchanged.
The Analysis workspace presents descriptive summaries derived from the live database: the annual distribution of included fatalities and qualifying operation records, and the individual age-at-death values supported by accepted birth information. The figures are descriptive only, and coverage of accepted birth information is uneven. Frozen Version 1.0 remains unchanged.
30 August 2026Persian names and age at deathPerson dossiers now include Persian-script names and, where supported, age at death; unsupported cases are shown as Unknown.
Person dossiers in the live Iran Monitor database now include Persian-script names and, where the available birth information permits, age at death. Cases in which age cannot be established under the current audit rule are shown as Unknown. Birth dates are not displayed in the dossiers; only age at death is shown. Age at death is planned for inclusion in Version 1.1. Persian-script names are a live website/presentation field only and are excluded from the Version 1.1 scholarly dataset export.
29 August 2026Geography and record auditA completed location-precision audit corrected nine location fields, added supporting sources, and corrected two record details.
A location-precision audit of the live database has been completed. Nine location fields were corrected or refined, additional supporting sources were added to selected dossiers, Amir Shariat’s role description was corrected, and Gholamreza Soleimani’s death date was corrected. Frozen Version 1.0 remains unchanged.
